on this date...
The first long distance telephone call without operator assistance was made on this date, in 1951. Next year, surely, every phone company in the world will advertise this and advise us to celebrate the 55th anniversary of this "historical event" by placing lenghier-than-lengthy long distance calls from coast-to-coast, and continent-to-continent... Sure... that is an anniversary worth celebrating...! The day when what led to unbelievable amounts of money squandering and incessant prattling and rambling was first inaugurated... whoopee-do...
In 1793, France did one better on this date when it "ended forced worship of God" - and this is a victory for "Liberté, Égalité et *cough* Justice"?!? Hardly... As if worshipping Love Personified was... wrong? Freedom of speech is one thing - freedom of religion another - and misinterpreting the meaning of both the word "liberty" as the word "forced" is yet another! Worshipping a Greater Power -no matter what name we feel inclined towards attributing to That Power- should never be likened to forced labor or something - sheesh!
Finally, of note to TLB's author, on this date in 1908, the first Gideon Bible was placed in a hotel room... the Gideon Bible aka The Traveler's Bible. Seemed like a good idea at the time... People probably stopped noticing it was there within a couple of decades - for sure during the swinging sixties, so-so seventies and egotistical eighties... but I digress...

The only time I remember seeing calls being made that had to have operator assistance was in the old back and white Lassie series! lol
I remember when I was a kid there used to be a party line out here in the country. Several famies shared a line. I'm not sure how it worked. lol
I think I used the operator a bit too much when I was a teen. I was too lazy & didn't want to look up the numbers. So I would call the operator. lol
Even though I believe everyone should worship God, I do believe that it should be their own choice to do so, not be made to worship God. It means nothing to God if the person does not believe it in their heart and are only going through the motions. They might be worshiping idols in secret, and worshiping God in public, if they are MADE to worship God.
I like the way the USA has the freedom of religion. Nobody can be forced to believe what they don't want to believe.
I remember the Gidions Bibles. They came to my Schools when I was a kid. I went to private schools, so they came a few times to pass out Bibles to those who said they didn't have one. lol It was required for us to own a Bible as one of our school books. So I am not sure why they came.
God Bless You (\ô/) Luciano!

Operators spawned or inspired ONE good song... no, not New Edition's Mr. Telephone Man but really the song that had a chorus like this:
Operator
This is an Emergency!
Operator (...)
I forget the rest, sorry!
I even forget who sang it - but it sounded techno-pop to me!
So much for my prodigious luminous memory...! *sigh*
Oh - I KNOW many people that profess to love God in public - and their private actions (as well as what is to be found in their rotten hearts) does not match up at all with their "public persona"...
Hypocrisy runs rampant though - in everything... not just that!
Too bad Gideons are not seen in my area - me, with the Samson Complex I have got, and them... what a meeting at the summit that would be!
Gideon, Samson and John The Baptist are my favorites (aside from The Redeemer Himself, of course!) and them meeting, SOMEHOW, would have made more sense than that bizarre film that time forgot - a curiosity on celluloid titled... "Hercules, Samson and Ulysses"
Sheesh - Ulysses?!?
Lest it was James Joyce's... LOL
*LOL* My word verification read "pohza" - which would be saying that if I ever refer to myeslf as "I, Stud", I would effectively a poser... a pretender! Hmm... Makes me think, for some reason, about one Andrew Bennett... aka "I, Vampire" - a guy who owed a whole lot to Dark Shadows' own Barnabas Collins if you ask me...
During the pre-Crisis, in Brave & Bold Batman met with Andrew Bennett, a vampire seeking atonement for his crimes. Under the title, "I...Vampire" Andrew Bennett's adventures could be found in the House of Secrets.
Now, let's not get into what the pre- or post- Crisis eras are... but, yeah; "House of Secrets" was a comic-book that also owed a lot to... House of Dark Shadows!
DC was never known for its originality first and foremost, nope... but that most certainly is another story...
Blessings!

I would be remiss if I did not make mention of another... DC anomaly!
Andrew Bennett / Barnabas Collins
is one thing...
Tim Hunter / Harry Potter
(and Larry Potter too... and Harry Houdini... and there are more...)
is another...
Gaiman, Neil, wr. "The Invisible Labyrinth." The Books of Magic Vol. 1, No. 1 (New York: Vertigo-DC Comics, 1990): 32-36. BSF. (Rpt. entry 116.)
The Phantom Stranger takes Tim Hunter on a tour through the history of magic in the DC universe. They eventually meet a fourteen year old Merlin, who sums up his future and that of Camelot. App. Iason [Jason Blood]. [Original not seen.]
Gaiman, Neil, wr. "The Land of Summer's Twilight." The Books of Magic Vol. 1, No. 3 (New York: Vertigo-DC Comics, 1990): 18-22. BSF. [source AN 17 Nov. 1997] (Rpt. entry 116.)
Doctor Occult and his sister Rose take Tim Hunter on a journey into the worlds of Faerie, where Tim meets the bard True Thomas of Erceldoun. Thomas sings of the king who sleeps beneath the hollow hill called Joyous Garde, and he explains that the king has many names, including Arthur. [Original not seen.]
"Original not seen" - no kidding.
More like "originality not seen" if you ask me!
Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore both are syphon-type of scribes - they suck up elements from left and right and make it their own material... They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - but I disagree!
An excerpt from my "thoughts to grow by" (seen on my "luminous space" - and previously right here on TLB!):
"Exaggeration is the true sincerest form of flattery -not imitation- for two reasons; it is more creative and much more flattering!"
MORE CREATIVE... the key element there!
Typo alert - "if I ever refer to myself as "I, Stud", I would effectively be a poser... a pretender!" however that is still not a poser or pretender like Moore and Gaiman are... eh?
;)
Don't you love it when these luminous connections I make aaaaaaaaaaaaall come together so neatly and so well as that... hmm?
Blessings!

I just noticed I had several spelling mistakes! YIKES!!
*black and white* instead of back and white. *families instead of famies*
Yeah I do love it when you make all those luminous connections come together so smoothly! You are a Master of luminous connections!
I used to watch Dark Shadows all the time, whenever it was on!
It was like a vampire soap oprea.
I really like your excerpt from your "thoughts to grow by"!
I totally agree with you on that!
Hmmmm I agree with you on a lot of things, now don't I. lol
When YOU are right YOUR'RE right!!
How can I disagree with anything that is so luminous?! :D ;)
God Bless You (\ô/) Luce!

There is no need to deprive yourself of reading The Luminous Blog - for it is free to do so! (Well - as free as internet providers make it, really! But that is not my fault - blame your ISP! *lol*).
I would not mind though being REMUNERATED to write this - which I describe as an "all-encompassing editorial-style coverage of what's happening... with style and substance!" - *lol* ;)
