the more things change...

So now we are under a new administration... :/

Things are likely to remain the same, minus a Colin Powell or two... (lol)
Are people so afraid of change that they prefer to stick with mediocrity (lest it is the devil they know...?).

Apparently so...

In the past, there have been plenty of examples though that "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" is NOT exactly the best way to go...

-they stuck with Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan as 007s way too long (some people never learn...).

-the French held on far too long to their vain hopes of matching up to the British Empire... which led to such absurdities and extremes, such as founding a North American colony that had no business even EXISTING there...

-Grady Little knows all about that as well... (!).

I would bother finding some more... but it is Saturday and I deserve a luminous break! ;)

(Or - let's save it for tomorrow's entry!).

Blessings!

Of turn-offs... and other "of's"... "co-off"*** ''cough''***

After tackling head-on the less attractive oral aspects of modern language in America... it is time to beat down the written aspects as well... if not far more decisively! After all, ancient wisdom said it best - "les paroles s'envolent; mais les écrits restent"... meaning that, basically, written blunders are far more incriminating evidence... and twice as annoying because of that!

Is there something more annoying than the bastardizing of the written language?
Name me a single more irritating pet peeve of any remotely-so well-read individual on the face of God's Green Earth... :/

The single most pernicious one of them all has got to be... the ill-advised usage of, indeed, the preposition "of"...

"Of" is a preposition that denotes removal and separation (how... fitting!) but also ownership, attribute, material and quality (or... lack thereof...?).

NOWHERE does it ever say that it can substitute for the verb to HAVE...

Why do some odd configurations of sentences find their way onto all matters of things - including even e-mails sent to ME... (T.S. - this one is for you babe!).

"I would of to do this..."
"I of to go there..."
"How can it be that we of such different points of view..."

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggghhhhh ---!!!
If I have the misfortune of receiving another missive which sponsors the misuse of the preposition "of"... I will OF to OFF it!

Indubitably! ;)

Blessings - to the grammatically-challenged and misspellers all around...!
They need it badly...

Let's... move on...!?!

Yep - as Sammy Davis Jr. used to say so well, when things were somehow less than conclusive (or... rational?).

Let's instead investigate (for no apparent reason now...) the wondrous world of... the most irritating phrases of all.

"When readers or listeners come across these tired expressions, they start tuning out and completely miss the message -- assuming there is one," they say...

People who busily "touch base" or talk about "ballpark figures" and "bottom lines" are not "singing from the same hymn sheet," they are quietly driving others to distraction. Sounds like anybody YOU know...?

“Using these terms in daily business is about as professional as wearing a novelty tie or having a wacky ringtone on your phone,” AND YET...

A particular bugbear is the constant use of “like” as a form of punctuation.

Something as widely -recognized as a pain-you-know-where had to be affixed an irksome label... and here it is: Gobbledegook!

Experts said that they had expected geographical variations, but the same phrases appeared to be universally annoying around the world.

Gobbledegook jargon and clichés really are no respecter of international boundaries; that may mean that the internet is doing its job and that we are truly becoming a global village... of messed-up and mediocre English.

Other named-and-shamed clichés include:

-- "blue-sky thinking" (but not a very sunny day anyway...)
-- "it’s not rocket science" (it couldn't be...)
-- "crack troops" (yes... they ARE that well-organized...)
-- "between a rock and a hard place" (made for a very annoying song too once...)
-- "I hear what you’re saying" (...) (DUH!)
-- "touch base" (of course Mr. Burns - baseball is an allegory for Life... WE ALL KNOW THAT!)
-- "bear with me" (... while I'm dogging ya?)
-- "to be honest with you" (...)

Hopefully, this next one will never make it to the list...
Because it is my sign-off signature word...
Blessings! ;)

say it isn't so...

they didn't re-elect Dubya...
they didn't re-elect Dubya...
they didn't re-elect Dubya...
they didn't re-elect Dubya...
they didn't re-elect Dubya...
they didn't re-elect Dubya...

Denial can be a great tool to offset the absurd, you know... ;)

Blessings! (you will need it...)

when all else fails...

Go with the wrestling analysis...

Imagine John Kerry, Dubya and Bin Laden (and even the other guy... whatsisname again... Nader, right...) are all "rasslers"...

Involved in a triple steel-cage WCW "thundercage match" or something...!!! (I say WCW because I am not about to make mention of the monopoly-building Vinnie Mac... why should I? Billy Gates is another I would not mention... oops, just did. :().

Undecided voters should go with the "good guy" -face as opposed to heel in rasslin jargon- in there, the one they feel most capable of coming out of there VICTORIOUS... And that is in a scenario not involving outside interference... such as one of the daughters distracting an opponent... Cheney throwing in a pair of brass-knuckles... Condoleeza attacking like a shrieking banshee off the rafters... The usual fare!
(lol).

Frankly - I see only one possible choice under those strict criteria - Kerry!

Then again, there are those who see all four best cast as a classic example of "choices between the lesser evil" (although Bin Laden is not on the ballot, he thinks he is, I believe...), neer' do wells and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse no less...!

Good Election Day my dear Americans!
Good luck living with the results for the next four years! ;)

Blessings! (While electing... if the two can go together at all...!).

the clock is ticking down...

Kerry and Bush - Bush and Kerry
Dubya and JK... neither JFK material, but then again one was enough!
Redskins & Red Sox victories seem to favor Kerry.
But then again - it is Cheney who has a daughter that is gay...?
Who knows which way the 15 MILLION new voters swing, really?
So, once again, the outcome of the vote is in the hands of a minority;
not any particular group mind you - just a finite number of individuals
And surely that cannot be what a democracy is all about... eh?
