Public Health Service Time!

Truth is, I care about you guys! :)
And this will make up for "no blogging" on Friendship Day... doh! *LOL*
If it doesn't, nothing will!
Hence, onwards to HEALTH TIPS AND OTHER HELPFUL THINGIES!
All of this courtesy of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (you know it is a good reliable source if it has a John in there somewhere - Johns are good chaps, even if the name, once pluralized, has a bad connotation that some attribute to Richard Lionheart himself... Gee, I could tell about chaps named Rich... But I won't!

I love doctors (...) everyone who knows me KNOWS just how much I do (more on that - tomorrow!) so it should come as no surprise that I am mightily proud to quote from one - Dr. Rolf! No, not the muppet - that's Rawlf! Rowlf? Anyway!!! He plays the piano - he's no quack! May have portrayed one in a sketch, once or twice, with Miss Piggy playing the nurse... But I digress!
When asked if "it’s okay for people to drink out of plastic water bottles?"
Rolf Halden, Ph.D. says:
First, people should be more concerned about the quality of the water they are drinking rather than the container it’s coming from. Many people do not feel comfortable drinking tap water, so they buy bottled water instead. The truth is that city water is much more highly regulated and monitored for quality. Bottled water is not. It can legally contain many things we would not tolerate in municipal drinking water.
Having said this, there is another group of chemicals, called phthalates that are sometimes added to plastics to make them flexible and less brittle. Phthalates are environmental contaminants that can exhibit hormone-like behavior by acting as endocrine

Enlightening aqua commentary there, I must admit... I suspected so much for the longest time too! However, Dr. Rolf's medical facility there has been attributed rather odd and even alarming "issued warnings":
Cancer update -- Johns Hopkins -- Cancer News from Johns Hopkins:

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters.

So it was stated, at any rate...
They are not making any friends over at Naya and Nestlé's bottled water division! Then again, they don't need them - they have bigger, greater and richer pals in several pharmaceutical giants... And we all know that a glass of tap water is all you need to help you swallow that overpriced prescribed crap that will NOT cure you!
But that is another story...
Dr. Rolf does actually discredit the "freezing bottled water alert" scare, currently prevalent in some forwarded e-mails, to be honest... When asked "What do you make of these email warnings that claim dioxins can be released by freezing water in plastic bottles?", he answers sharply (like any TV doctor would...)
"No. This is an urban legend. There are no dioxins in plastics. In addition, freezing actually works against the release of chemicals. Chemicals do not diffuse as readily in cold temperatures, which would limit chemical release if there were dioxins in plastic, and we don’t think there are."
Hmm... They don't THINK there are. I hate it when docs do that. They leave you with that lingering doubt - same as a dime-story scribe will leave you dangling on the edge with a cliffhanger and a dozen loose plot threads to cling on to...! That is, of course, to have us go back for another high-priced consultation, surely...
Who says doctors have nothing in common with charlatans of old who'd go from town to town selling their "miraculous potion" in old whiskey bottles...? I see lots of similarities, all the way down to the recycling habits...!
See you all tomorrow for an *official* quack bashings post - this was nothing! ;)

Comments:
Let it be clear though that I do not encourage to guzzle down the water straight from the tap either - it is the same water that goes through your toilet, as so admirably made clear in a recent commercial seen on whatever network it was...

I strongly encourage all to do as I do - BOIL THE WATER BEFORE CONSUMING IT.

Anyway, one has no choice when one is making some tea! ;)

The Ontario Canada poisoned water tragedy of just a few years back (I forget the town - name starts with a "W") should make you want to do that already - since Ontario is THE main Canadian province and if tap water was THAT bad there... It is bad everywhere!

Oh - and if you do buy bottled water - RECYCLE THE DAMN BOTTLES!

It's not like you have to CLEAN THEM FIRST - sheesh!

More on that though - on some future blog post!
