Bombay bombs... and other Bollywood offerings
I have been blasting Bollywood - but hey, let's give them credit when it is due... They have a lot more guts than Hollywood! 9Of course, I have been blasting Hollywood a lot more over the years - but that is another story!)
Where Tinseltown will not allow their own Will Smith to liplock freely with, say, Cameron Diaz or Charlize Theron (the latter could though... with Christina Ricci - in Monster - makes sense...) and we will never see a Hollywood melodrama centered around the impossible love story of an American soldier and a female terrorist trained by Al Qaida either... Well, Bollywood, somehow, WILL have a Romeo & Juliet type of tale with he being Hindi and she being Pakistani - the unthinkable! Such a pairing reeks of Shakespearian tragedy indeed - especially when one realizes that a nuclear war between these two countries is likelier now than the same thing between the USA and old USSR ever was at the height (or coldest days) of the cold wars...!
Kudos to Bombay for being gutsier than Tinseltown - but it comes as no surprise to me really... ANYONE could be gutsier than the "big studios" and their wretched system! And then they wonder why attendances are down...
I doubt though that the "guts" part is what makes George Clooney inclined to set a precedent and jump the fence to go to Bollywood's camp...
He must fancy the Shiva types...

Cross-cultural tryst sweeps Bollywood awards
June 12, 2005 - 1:38PM
Made in Bombay... Indian Bollywood director Yash Chopra receives the award for best movie.
A Romeo and Juliet romance between an Indian pilot and his Pakistani sweetheart has triumphed at the Bollywood film awards ceremony held in Amsterdam.
Veer Zaara, which won the best film prize and earned Yash Chopra a best director's award, is a timely tale of cross-cultural love as India and Pakistan engage in a little relationship-warming themselves.
All the Bollywood glitterati descended on Amsterdam late yesterday for the annual awards ceremony of the Indian cinema industry's "Oscars", which was beamed across the globe to an estimated 400 million television viewers.
Since 2000, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) has staged the extravaganza abroad to raise the international profile of its home-grown "made in Bombay" movie industry. India is the world's biggest film producer at around 1,000 features a year, even if the budgets are no match for Hollywood.
Veer Zaara, the names of the film's two young lovers, took six awards in all, with leading man Shahrukh Khan scooping the best actor award and Rani Mukherji picking up the supporting actress prize.

AdvertisementKhan's win was no surprise as the Bollywood superstar - India's answer to Tom Cruise - was nominated for best actor for his roles in three of the most fancied films.
Veer Zaara also won in the best music direction and best story categories.
However, the best actress award went to Rani Mukherji for her performance in another love story Hum Tum (You and Me).
Former Miss World Aishwarya Rai and veteran Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan - Indian cinema's "star of stars" - were among those taking part in the awards ceremony.
Despite the unusually cold June night, saris and cleavages were on display in Amsterdam's football stadium in a crowd of some 10,000 people.

I wonder if a love tryst between a hellcat and a diggety-doggety "dawg" from the hood counts as a "cross-cultural" tryst as well...
Just wondering, that's all!
